Baseball

Alex is currently on the East Rowan Little League, erll.org (Majors, 12 year old division, Yankees is his team name). He has practices on Monday afternoons from 5:30 to 7 pm and Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 12 pm. The have played 4 games so far, and their current standing is 2 wins and 2 losses. He plays left outfield and is the fastest player (runs the fastest) on his team. Once he makes it to 1st base, his coach would always want him to steal a base.

His first game was 2 weeks ago, on a Monday, which coincided with Ilya's soccer practice, so David and I split up into two groups. Even though the game didn't start until 5:45pm, Alex was required to be there 30 minutes before the game so that he can do some warm up exercises with the team. So, I drove Alex to the baseball field and David took Ilya to practice. After Ilya's practice, David drove Ilya home to change and then rushed back to the baseball field to watch Alex's game. Other times, his games were at 7pm. We usually don't make it back to the house until almost 9:30.

We haven't been able to take good pictures of Alex, yet, because the last few games were at night. And, without a good flash on David's Nikon D70 camera, we haven't been able to take good long distant outdoor pictures during the night. So, have patience with us and we promise to give you all some good pictures to enjoy, hopefully in the next two games, since games start at 5:45pm this week.

Soccer

Ilya has joined the YMCA youth soccer team. The last time she was on a team was when she was in kindergarten at Morrison Christian Academy. She never really liked it, but since all of her best friends are playing, she decided to give it another shot this time.
Their first game was Saturday, April 19. Out of a 40 minute game, she was in there for about 35 mins. The coach had substituted her once. She turned out to be one of the best players on the team! And, to my surprise, she shot her first goal, also the team's first goal, just a few minutes after the game started.
Besides games on every Saturday, she has soccer practice twice a week, on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 5:30-6:30pm. During this time David and I would walk on the many different trails at the Y, and by the time we are done with our exercise, we usually have about 10 more minutes to spare to watch Ilya at practice.

I want her to stay active and to have fun with her friends. I 'm glad she took my advice and joined the league.

One of the greatest pleasures I have had today was strolling back to my room after my very first gross anatomy exam (hopefully it went as well as I expected). Glorious bright sun, azure heavens unmarked by clouds, light breeze, birds chirping, fresh crisp air. The sun bathing my limbs in warmth, my heart and mind rejoicing with the fact that my exam was over ... until I have to start studying for my genetics one next week.

But, I did find some time to take pictures of the blooming cherry blossoms on campus!

So I'm going to admit that I photoshopped the cherry blossoms in the first picture on the left. I was dissatisfied with the natural lack of coloration in our flowers. The interesting thing, though, is that they bloom on the actual tree trunks. Did you know that? I sure didn't.

A nice close-up of a cherry blossom.

This is Drumheller fountain. It is a lot prettier on picture than it is in real life. The real experience is a lot less pleasurable since the water isn't very clean (ever smell a fish tank?). The moment the wind blows, you're greeted with foul-smelling water droplets that spray through the wind.
On the left is the Electrical Engineering building while on the right is the Organic Chemistry labs, where I spent countless hours banging my head on the desk because chemistry makes no sense to me at all.

A block away from campus is the bustling street we call the "Ave". University Avenue is lined with various shops, but mostly restaurants for people like me who absolutely despise cooking. Food is cheap, 珍珠奶茶 is pretty good (outside of the stuff you get in 台灣, of course), and it's relatively safe as long as you stay in the area. Anyways, I think this picture does a good job at depicting life on the Ave!

PS. Pictures were definitely not taken with your typical point-and-shoot. These beautiful 8.2 megapixel photographs were brought to you by my friend's Canon EOS 30D camera.

Trip to LA from NC

It was so good to see David's family and DaJye's family. It was our first time meeting Katelyn since she was born. Even though she was shy, she had a special affinity for Ilya. Ilya thinks she's a magnet for younger kids. It took Justin, Alex and Ilya less than 30 seconds to be acquainted with each other. They all had a good time. Justin made my stepdaughter, Katie, laugh the whole we were together. Justin is no longer the shy little boy I used to know. He played well with Alex and Ilya and he clowned around so much that we all ended up with achy tummy muscles from laughing so much. :)

When my new house is built which we projecting it to be at the end of the summer, I hope all of you would come for a visit.

Miss you all,

Shiowchi

The Getty Center

I don't know if you all have been to the Getty Center in LA. We chose to visit there over San Diego Zoo and Universal Studios because we got tired of waiting in line at Disneyland. Since David and Katie had only 2 whole days to go around in LA, we decided not to waste our time standing in line for a ride this time.

The Getty Center is a place for people who are into art and architecture. We had lunch at a very nice restaurant there called "The Restaurant". We could vaguely see the Santa Monica Mountains from the restaurant because of the air pollution. What a shame! They also offer free art and craft workshops for children. The best part about the museum is that there is no admission fee. The workshops are also free. The only money you need to spend is the parking fee, $8/car if you decide to bring your own food and have an outdoor picnic.

Spending time at the Getty Center was a great move in planning our trip this time. Katie had so much fun that she suggested that we should make this (traveling to LA) a tradition during Spring break.

Posted by Picasa

Just want to share some recent photos of our trip to LA. Katelyn wanted to see Cinderella's "home". Justin and Katelyn had a wonderful time with Alex and Ilya.
